A Testimony By Yuan Cheng
In 2022, my wife was pregnant and due to give birth in April. The night before our regular gynae appointment, she noticed that the baby’s movement in her womb was very infrequent. At the checkup the next day, we found out that the baby’s heartbeat was very slow. Several nurses even had difficulty detecting the baby’s heartbeat!
With that, she had to undergo an emergency Caesarean delivery and had to immediately proceed to the delivery ward. I couldn’t even say goodbye to her or wish her well since we were still within COVID precautionary measures, and I had to do a swab test for COVID. When I was done with the test, she was already pushed into the delivery room. I was at a loss as I couldn’t do anything at all. All I could do was to worry about how she was coping.
Thankfully, Baby Gemma was delivered safely! However, the doctors informed us that her heart rate had suddenly increased. The doctors had to prescribe a medicine that would stabilise Gemma’s heartbeat, but it also came with a risk of causing her heart to stop beating.
Scare after scare, we felt so hopeless and there was nowhere to go. Gemma’s life was dependent on her ability to receive medication. I felt so small in comparison to a life and death matter. All the material things we had, all the things we wanted to do was just so little in comparison to her life that God has created...
All we could do was to surrender and pray to God. We had no choice but to trust God in this process.
We were so discouraged and doubtful and had to lean on the support of our small group. They understood our situation and comforted us every step of the way. Every single day, the small group was praying together, texting words of encouragement in our WhatsApp group and calling us to pray with us. It was such a comfort for the group to shower their concerns upon Baby Gemma and my wife. This was where I realised that I found a second family in my life, where they were united with one purpose in coming forward to pray with us.
Gemma was warded in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for more than a week. During that week, I was so encouraged by my wife. I was thankful for how strong she was in this situation. Even though she had just given birth and was still recovering from the operation wounds, she demonstrated such motherly love by making trips to and fro to visit her.
Praise God—Gemma’s vital signs stabilized and she was discharged from NICU nine days later! God heard our prayers! Through this incident, our marriage was also strengthened, as we began to pray as husband and wife, shaping us to grow closer to God as well.
We praise God because He is a miracle worker!
