A Testimony By Rachel Law
Rachel reflects on her Cambodia trip and the ways God worked throughout the experience.
When I returned to Cambodia for the second time, I thought I knew what to expect. The programme was similar to the previous year’s, and I was especially looking forward to seeing familiar faces from New Life Fellowship. Since I was not leading any main programmes, I hoped simply to be present, support the team, and serve faithfully in small ways.
Yet the trip was different in unexpected ways. One of the most impactful moments happened through a youth named John. During an activity, he wrote that one of his worries was not having enough money. When I was asked to write him an encouragement, I prayed that God would provide for his needs as he surrendered to Him. At the time, I did not know John was a pre-believer.
Later, I noticed John sitting by himself and went over to speak with him.
We did not talk much, but he shared that he was learning more about God. It seemed like a simple conversation then, but looking back, I can see that God was already at work in his heart.
During a night workshop, John, David and Matt were in the same group. David mentioned that Matt had some questions, and I encouraged him to ask them even though they were off topic. I was not expecting such difficult apologetics questions from Matt, who was also a pre-believer, and later from David, who had grown up in a Christian family. I simply shared my convictions and testimony as best as I could.
Throughout the conversation, John listened quietly. On the last day of camp, David and John came up to me during lunch, and David told me that John had accepted Jesus into his life. I was deeply encouraged, knowing it must have taken courage for John to step out in faith.
That moment reminded me that God moves in unexpected ways, and that we should not limit what He can do through us. We are called to be faithful and obedient, while trusting the Holy Spirit to convict hearts in God’s timing.
It was also encouraging to see the youths asking questions and seeking to know God more. Whether it was Matt as a pre-believer, or David who had grown up in a Christian family, I was glad to see them digging deeper. Though I wished for more conversations, I know our ministry with them continues through prayer.
Beyond John’s testimony, I believe God was working in many youths throughout the camp—bringing assurance of identity in Christ, freedom from bondages, and salvation. Through our daily debriefs, I also saw how God used the ministry to encourage and shape our own team.
Being back in Cambodia reminded me of the beauty of the wider body of Christ. Worshipping with the locals in different languages reminded me that we are one Church, worshipping the same Almighty God—sovereign over every ruler, authority and nation, and fully worthy of my trust and surrender.
